船的螺旋桨的原理和直升机机翼原理一样,靠的是转动产生的推力或升力。产生的力与介质密度成正比,转速平方成正比,面积成正比,另外还有个升力系数。水的密度是空气的800倍,所以面积可以比直升机的小很多。

水的巨大浮力就抵消了船的重量,所以螺旋桨的动力要求就相应降低了。实际上,大型船舶的螺旋桨还是很大的,直径在1-10米,重量数吨到数十吨,而且大型船舶的螺旋桨数量也不是1个,通常都在2个以上。
