If there's one consistent reason that Ebert fails to appreciate great films, it's because one of the principal characters gets things done more with physical prowess than mental powers. Roger always was, first and foremost, an intellectual, and the idea that there's more important things in the world than being good with a typewriter was always challenging for him. Surely the most prominent example of this would be Ridley Scott's Gladiator, but it stands in the case of Leon too, plainly. It's also the reason he didn't fully understand some of Takeshi Kitano's films.
